tech effect
Today we have so many different sources to chose from thanks to the internet websites. Google the search engine can help you find just what you are lookinig for but with great browsing comes great responsibilities. Sure there are alot of good things posted on the internet but theres also people that just like spreading lies. Lies that eventually get notice and are the main highlights. Also social networking can help a bit too such as facebook, if you have a friend on facebook that attends the same class as you then you can ask what you missed. Or they might know better sources for things you might want to know. The internet has a big impact on the things we do, we rely on it for emails from work, school and family. We use it to check are bank accounts, entertainment, to find the nearest restaurant and so forth. Ive been told that back in the day everyone would go to the library and do there homework there looking for books to write there essays and no one relied on the internet. We have become to dependant on the internet and thats not good because it serves as a shortcut and its making us lazy...in my opinion.

The internet does have a lot of junk on it, there is no denying that. But when people have to sift through all the garbage to find the good information, this can help develop critical thinking skills. If you think about it, going to the library to do research is not that much different. Yes, the information is typically more credible, but if you are writing a research paper your not going to use every reference you come across. I do not think this is making people lazy, it can help lazy people be more lazy but they are always finding some way to avoid productive activities.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you in a way.....library or no library, internet or no internet...people are going to do what they got to do..or not for that matter. The internet is awesomely disceptive in everything it holds. Unlike old school ways, you actually have to disprove everything you read to ensure it is worthy of citing, which causes you about the same amount of work as just going to the library. The laziness comes when the mind set turns into "oh I can put off going to the library or doing research because just a couple clicks away and I can get all I need." When that happens the fact checking filter is non-existant ,traded for getting a paper done on time. The student doesn't learn anything from this process but how to format a paper. The information goes in one ear and out the other onto the page and poof is not retained. Nothing gained in the education of the student.
ReplyDeleteTheres a ton of info in the internet and it is important that we are careful when we use it. The library is still a great place but whats more convenient? your home! its 12 am and you suddenly realize you got a paper due in 8 hours the internet is there while the library is closed.
